Glam Baby Shower

I had the pleasure of throwing the cutest little baby shower for a long time friend of  mine and it was SO glam I just had to share every detail with you all!

The shower was a "ladybug" theme, so I decided to keep it classy but very, very cute!

I wanted to take the time to show you guys the party decor and provide you with a few links to where I got everything in case you have an event coming up soon!

Let's start off with the welcome table!

The decor for this table was kept sweet and simple. A cute display of the ultrasound sat on top of pink and gold decorative boxes found at Home Goods. We asked guest to add their address to a blank envelope so that she could promptly get out thank you cards. The pink tin we held the envelopes in was from the Target dollar spot, as well as the chalkboard welcome banner!

I also kept the gift table simple since this was a pretty large shower (with over 50 guest). I left plenty of room for her many gifts by just adding the cutest

Tassel Banner

from one of my favorite Etsy shops.

Guest who brought diapers were entered into a raffle! We used this corner of the gift table to hold the tickets.

We also asked guest to bring baby a book instead of a card. The alphabet box is from Ross.

Now for the Sweets table!!

This table was obviously the focal point of the room! I used a black photography background and added these fun and easy DIY

Decorative Tissue Paper Pom-poms Flowers

from Amazon. They were so easy to make and even easier to add to the backdrop!

The

Gold Name Banner

is from the same Etsy shop as the tassel banner and it was absolutely perfect! The

Gold Sequin Fabric

underneath the sweets is from Amazon.

Now lets get into what was actually ON the table:

This adorable cake and mini cupcakes were created at

Flour Child Bakery

. Everyone loved the amaretto flavor!

These adorable ladybug cookies were from

Mary's Cakes and Pastries

!

Another big hit at the sweets table were these cute little candy apples from

Exquisite Sweetz and Treats

!

Most of the other candy treats were from

Oriental Trading Compan

y

 candy buffet section.

Last is the simple glam table decor.

The

Polka Dot Cotton Table Runner

was from Amazon and I used the same

Decorative Tissue Paper Pom-poms Flowers

in a smaller size to run down the middle.

The gold glitter mason jars were a DIY project and the cute little graphics were made by a family friend!

Overall, the decor for the shower was so fun to create! The "mommy to be" absolutely loved it as well as the guest! This was the first time I've ever thrown and decorated an event like this, and although it was a bit challenging, I really enjoyed putting together every detail!

Let me know what you think!

The Icon Collection

If you follow me on Instagram (@

TheMonaLisaa

), then you've seen that I've recently changed my gallery wall from the layout above (blog post coming soon about that), and although I LOVE my new wall, it was very hard for me to part with some of the images I used in the gallery!

You'll notice the not so common wall art such as photos of

Dorothy Dandridge

,

Eartha Kitt

, and

Diahann Carroll

on this wall, and those images mean so much to me. This is why I decided to incorporate them in my entryway as a "hall of fame"...

You wont find these faces in your local TJmaxx or HomeGoods on a beautiful canvas like you would find an image of Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, and its very unfortunate. These are the women that I look up to and admire. These are my Icons.

I recently came across a post on my sweet blogger friend Lauren's Instagram (@

ChicUrbanMom

) and she was rocking a shirt that caught my eye! Lauren has the cutest shop with what I would call "wearable art".

Its called "

The Icon Collection

"...and when I read up on the meaning behind her shop I felt as though she was reading my mind!

Here's a little blurb from the site (http://myiconictee.com

) about "The Icon Collection":

"

As a young girl I grew tired of trying to find trendy items that featured beautiful brown girls like me. When I had my daughter the longing to have images that look like her became even stronger and that is how The Icon Collection was born. On a daily basis I see t-shirts, artwork, home decor etc. highlighting the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and others. It is very rare and almost impossible to find things that showcase women of color who are trendsetters in their industries. The Icon Collection’s goal is to change that, to make it a normal experience to see beautiful, trendsetting women of color on artwork, t-shirts, and home décor as role models for our girls!"

I was SO excited when Lauren sent me a shirt I couldn't help but put it on and twirl around proudly! There are so many Icons that go unrecognized, whether its in fashion or home decor, I believe creating things that represent what/who you love is so very important!

Im no model, so I cropped out my face, but its about the shirt..not me haha!

Hats off to you Lauren for creating this beautiful wearable art!

Back to my roots

In honor of Black History Month, I've decided to take it back to my African roots and share with you my new favorite home decor accent!

My mother was digging through some old fabric for me, and ran across this beautiful African cloth.

I instantly fell in love with the colors and pattern and decided to do a little research to find out the exact type of cloth it was. I found a really

informative

article

explaining the differences between kente, kuba, and mud cloths.

After examining my cloth I learned that it best resembles a traditional mud cloth. The article states:

"

The process of creating mud cloth also called "bogolanfini" artwork requires both patience and skill. Long cloth strips,

 finimugu

, about six inches wide are woven by men a

nd sold in rolls at the market

."

They explained how actual mud is left to ferment for a year and the cloth is then dipped in it for its color.

"

Mordanting the cloth then painting it with

mud rich in

iron oxide produces the black or dark brown color for which bogolanfini is most recognized."

There was so much information about mud cloth and its patterns. If you're interested in more check it out

here

!

After my educational lesson, I began to wonder how I could possibly incorporate it into my home decor. I definitely think since the cloth I have is so large it could be used as a table cloth or used to recover a cushion such as the seat on my entryway chair!

I found an

etsy shop

that had a similar idea:

I love how the cloth looks as a table cloth! I think it would be great to pull out for special occasions or to impress some home guest!

Next up are these gorgeous pillows! If you know me, you know that I'm a pillow hoarder. Im obsessed with the rich colors and geometric patters. 1.

 3.

This Etsy shop

created some beautiful wall art that is simple and clean, yet still an eye catcher. I think this is a great neutral that can be used in any space!

These photos have really inspired me to try new things with my decor! What's your favorite use & how would you incorporate African cloth into your home?
